Latest landscapes

The work in this section represents a change of tack in landscape and 'life' painting. There is more a sense of attack to the brush application. An urgency of touch. I am trying to feel my way through a picture responding in a more emotive way to the subject. Following the example of John Singer Sargent who has long been an artistic hero of mine and more recently Hercule Brabizon Brabizon. I am looking to amplify colour and light using minimum 'touch' for maximum effect. The years of carefully trying to represent the scene as an accurate reflection capturing 'detail' wherever possible have been pushed aside. Now I am trying to edit the scene. Concentrate on only the elements that excite or I feel are visually essential.

I painted this image as a demonstration for an art group I teach on a Friday morning at Heaton Adult Association who where painting a series of images on site at Axwell park. I was trying to illustrate this new approach combined with oil pastels to help capture flickering light.

This painting and the two below were painted alongside Ben Haslam on a painting trip to the Lake District. This is the only visit I have ever made to the lakes where it was strong sunlight and very warm temperatures. So warm in fact that we both went swimming in the river whilst we waited for various stages of the paintings to dry.

Beats a day in the office!

Painting this sunset on Derwent water was such fun. The light was blinding making the colour's intense.

On a recent day trip with Ben I painted this in the Lakes. I quite like the creamy consistency of the colour handling of the light in the hills, but am unsure of the tree in the foreground.

Painted on the same day as the image above with Ben Haslam in English Lakes. I feel this painting is trying to make the best of uninspiring light......and is consequently a little uninspiring. I think I am beginning to loose the thrill of painting 'the view'. I want to find something unusual within the composition, a feel for my way of looking, which will pull the viewer into the picture. Here Idon't see it.
